Function Block Diagrams are comprised of a number of function blocks such as the one below:

Each block has a number of inputs and outputs. These may be one of two types (Event input/output or Data input/output). In a function block diagram these inputs and outputs are connected in a meaningful way in order to capture the functionality of the system.

Each function block can be programmed internally in a variety of languages. The following is a block which has been programmed as a state transition diagram:
